Confronting Colonialism in the Classroom Virtual Series: Myth vs. Reality - Teaching About Thanksgiving

  • Zoom (A Link Will Be Sent Prior to the Event) (map)

Thanksgiving is a widely celebrated holiday in the United States whose origins are often associated with an event between Wampanoag people and the Pilgrims in 1621. But what truth lies behind this story? In classrooms every year, students often learn a romanticized, often false version of this event. From storybooks to dress up, resources and lesson plans can perpetuate stories that not only lack the full truth but also cause harm to Indigenous children and families. Since 1970, this harm, amongst others, is acknowledged every year at another event that occurs on the same day, the National Day of Mourning, often as an act of resistance to settler colonialism. In this workshop, we will explore the origins of these events, how they came to be, and resources that center a truthful story.
